Growing information
Days to germination: 10-12 days at 18-21°C
Sowing:
Transplant (recommended): Sow 4-6 weeks before planting out. Barely cover the seed, as light helps germination. Transplant into cell packs or larger containers when the first true leaves appear. In the greenhouse, grow transplants at 10-13°C to help keep plants compact and prevent stretching. Harden off and transplant outside after the last frost.
Direct sow: Successive sowings every 2-3 weeks until late spring give the best quality flowers and pods.
Support: Plants may require support as they grow.
Light preference: Sun
Plant height: 60-90 cm. Plant supports such as horizontal support netting are recommended.
Plant spacing: 23-38 cm
Hardiness: Annual
Soil requirements: Rich, well-drained soil
Uses: Excellent cut flower. Ideal for the back of beds and borders.
Scientific name: Scabiosa atropurpurea, Scabiosa stellata
Alternate names: Mourning bride, drumstick flower
Harvest information
For Scabiosa atropurpurea, harvest when the flowers are almost fully open.
For Scabiosa stellata, harvest for fresh-cut or dried use when the seed heads are light green with dark bronze edges and the star-shaped centres are just turning black. If harvested too late, once the centres have fully turned or started falling out, the seed head can shatter and will no longer be useful.
